THE SELECTION PROCESS
Each year, the Malheur Rappel Crew seeks quality individuals to join our team. Before being considered for a position, applicants must meet these basic minimum requirements: be 18 years of age at the time of hire, be able to provide proof of U.S. citizenship, have at least one season (90 days or more) of wildland fire experience, and be able to complete the Work Capacity Test (WCT) at the arduous level.
We typically look for applicants with 3+ years of experience on hotshot crews, hand crews, engines, or helitack, though we do occasionally hire individuals with less experience. A combination of good attitude, excellent fitness, and life experience can make all the difference.
Our preference is for applicants at the GS-04/05 level to have some or all of the following qualifications: ICT5, FFT1, FAL2, EMTB, HECM, or other more advanced qualifications. While none of these are requirements, they all go a long way in making your application stand out.
We also encourage anyone interested in our program to give us a call us, email our hiring manager, or schedule a base visit – there are crewmembers here year-round who would be happy to give base tours and answer any questions you may have.
