Physical Training National Rappel Training
Our training staff is passionate about this mission and they continue to adapt and improve the schedule every year. Regardless of how long you work in the wildland fire service, achieving any kind of success means being a student of fire.
New rappellers can expect to see hands-on field training, classroom time and a variety of other formal and informal classes at MRC. They can also expect to be nominated for 200 and 300 level NWCG S-courses, including single resource boss and mid-level aviation courses. If crewmembers don't come in with ICT5 or HECM qualifications they will be offered opportunities to get some ink in the book.
In addition to the National Rappel Academy, MRC rookies attend "Aldrich Week", an annual field training exercise in the woods. The crew sets up camp in the Aldrich Mountains for 5 days to be tested in a variety of realistic training scenarios.
Our training program was largely set up by our former Airbase Manager, and current National Rappel Specialist, Eric Bush. He was with the crew from 1992 to 2017 and put forth a super-human effort when it comes to the MRC training agenda. It is due to his efforts that we can respond to the challenges presented to us. Bush was awarded The Honor of the Flying Hammer along with Mr. Meyerholz in 2012 for their dedication to the Malheur Rappel Crew for twenty years.
